A Smart Bracelet that Protects Civil Rights Activists

civil_rightsThe Civil Rights Defenders have developed a smart bracelet under Project Natalia that uses satellite navigation technology to alert social media and allies if the wearer is in danger or if it is removed. The purpose of this device is to prevent the disappearance of political activists or at least to mobilize their allies in case of an emergency. Disappearances and false arrests are a problem that plague the human rights sector as the powers that be attempt to dispatch those attempting to hold them accountable.

This device could prove invaluable for political activists fighting for human rights in regions where violence threatens their lives. The ability to contact their allies in the region could prevent their death or disappearance, especially if their captors are unaware of the bracelet’s ability. The ability to reach out in desperate times means that activists won’t completely disappear.

While it is not intended to do otherwise, the devices serve as a reporting mechanism and does little to safe guard the life of its wearer. While a little far-fetched, an implanted device that remains in the body, linked to the bracelet, would take this concept one step further.
