On Monday August 11th, 2014, the Design Africa Symposium will be held in Cape Town, South Africa.
This year’s event is themed ‘Design Visions for African Cities of the Future’ and will showcase the innovative work African design practitioners are doing to address the continent’s urban challenges.
“The objective is to analyse the urban development challenges facing African cities and to map out possible visions to re-shape African city environments into the future. The Symposium seeks to investigate how design creativity could influence development strategies and enable African cities to disentangle themselves from colonial and post-modern concepts of development. The focus will be on the urban scale of African cities rather than individual design interventions.”
The event is being sponsored by World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 and Luyanda Mpahlwa DesignSpaceAfrica. Guest speakers include : Angela Mingas (Angola), Joe Addo (Ghana), Sithabile Mathe (Botswana) and – from South Africa – Edgar Pieterse, Iain Louw, Rashiq Fataar and Luyanda Mpahlwa.
The symposium is intended to be recorded and documented to allow findings to be shared with industry professionals, institutions and policy makers in the future.
